Why Men and Women Pay Different Prices

Last updated on Apr 20, 2026

Men pay $4.99 per week. Women pay $0.99 per week. Every user, regardless of gender, pays something.

This isn't arbitrary. It reflects a core principle of how Rove works.

The Short Answer

Men and women experience dating apps differently. The price difference reflects that reality rather than pretending it doesn't exist.

The Longer Answer

On traditional dating apps, the gendered experience is dramatically asymmetric:

  • Men send the majority of the messages. Most don't get responses.
  • Women receive most of the messages. A large share are low-effort or inappropriate.
  • The volume for women can be overwhelming. The hit rate for men can be demoralizing.

The default solution in the industry is to pretend this asymmetry doesn't exist — charge everyone the same, or charge no one, and let the algorithm sort it out. The result is a worse experience for both sides.

Rove takes a different approach. We design for the actual asymmetry:

  • Men initiate. Taking shots is the active role. Men pay the higher rate because they're using the platform's scarcest resource — the opportunity to open a conversation.
  • Women choose. Receiving shots, reading them, accepting or declining — this takes emotional work in a different form. Women pay a lower rate because their investment is different in kind, not smaller in value.

Both sides pay. Both sides are committed. The difference reflects the different roles, not different worth.

Why Everyone Pays

Free dating apps have one thing in common: they're full of people who aren't really there. Bots, lurkers, people who downloaded the app on a whim, people who signed up once and never came back. The noise makes everything worse.

Rove has no free tier. Every profile you see is someone who pulled out their credit card and decided this was worth the cost of a small coffee. That single filter eliminates the majority of noise.

Is This Legal?

Yes. Gender-differentiated pricing on dating apps has been legally tested and upheld in multiple jurisdictions because the price reflects a materially different user experience, not discrimination. Several major dating platforms have used similar models.

If you're a trans or non-binary user and our pricing feels off, we want to talk. Email help@rovedating.com and we'll work it out.

Why Not Just Charge More?

We could. We've chosen weekly pricing because it matches the cadence of dating — most people think about their app weekly, not monthly. It also makes canceling painless if Rove isn't working for you.
